History of Fearwell
Fearwell was established as a “civilized” kingdom over 1000 years ago. A large and fearsome barbarian clan named Stonebreaker traveled many leagues across the Xanthin Ocean to claim a continent of their own. The clan did not foresee the 500 years of war that would result. The continent was ruled by the hardy Frost Giants that had called the land there home since the world’s creation by the One God. The Stonebreaker clan was set upon as soon as the first ship came ashore. The barbarian tribe, led by Uru Stonebreaker the first, was able to gain a foothold on the icy shore, which would become the kingdoms capital Igarfell in the years to come. The barbarian horde continued their expansion for hundreds of years finding many races of Giants that controlled the rich land. The barbarians viewed these giants as respected foes, but foes none the less. The Stonebreakers came to this land to settle and nothing would stand in their way.
In the centuries that followed the initial landing of the Stonebreakers many species of humanoid and monster were found in the new kingdom of Fearwell. Elves brought magic into the lives of humans as well as a way to detect talent that was hidden among the barbarian descendants. Though King Uru, the name of every king of Fearwell, was suspicious he saw the utility of magic.
There were native humans living in this land as well. Reddish skinned natives that had lived in throughout the land having to fend off predators of monster and giant alike. The natives had magic of their own that stemmed from there bond with the land.
For centuries humans, elves, gnomes, halflings and dwarves fought with the giants until the native druids could take no more of the destruction of the land and the peoples who lived upon it. The elder druids came together and brought forth their powerful magic to raise The Walls of Thorn. The walls were a dense thorn forest that blocked off the north and south parts of the continent in order to purge the kingdom of the offending giants and keep others from invading ever again. The druids have taken it upon themselves to tend these forests and help keep the creatures that took up residence within the woods from harming good honest folk as well as become the gate keepers for they are the only ones that can open portals through the wall for people to pass through.
King Uru Stonebreaker VIII then created the Wardens of the Thorn to assist the druids in protecting the people of the kingdoms. It became a last refuge for criminals who were given the choice, the blade or the wall. Over the years more and more criminals choose the blade than not.
With the war against the giant over the kingdom began to flourish. Cities and hamlets were established and peace reigned for years. Then came, what is now known, as the Age of the Magi.
Macros the Black, a renegade elven necromancer, formed an army of; monsters, other renegade magi, and undead to march on the kingdom of Fearwell. Macros believed that magic users should be the rulers since they held the power as well as the intellect to show the people a better way of life. The war would last over 400 years and change the perception of mages to the people of the kingdom forever. Macros was finally tracked down and destroyed by his fellow elven mages. The dark mage, with his final words and life energy, cursed the elven race. The elves from the day forward were changed both physically and mentally. The elven race became what is known today as orcs. This curse stole their long life span, there beauty, as well as their magic. With Macros’ curse came a great explosion destroying all of his attackers and created what is now known as the void.
King Uru Stonebreaker XVI has now rebuild the kingdom of Fearwell after the Magi war and is getting used to peaceful times with only one question on his mind……Will they last?
